A Rainbow Reflection

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

CoH member, and our former Minister for Peace and Justice, Paula Shonauer, was published today in Welcome to Our Big Gayborhood.  Read her reflection on the liberating power of the rainbow.  An excerpt:

Physicist W.J. Humphreys stated that the rainbow is a special distribution of colors (produced in a particular way) with reference to a definite point in the eye of the observer. As no single distribution can be the same for two separate points, it follows that two observers do not, and cannot, see the same rainbow. The perception of a rainbow is both a shared and individual experience.

Plans Spring Dialogue Event

(OKLAHOMA CITY) The Oklahoma City Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church & State (www.okau.org) has never sidestepped the hot button issues confronting the implementation of America’s Constitution. The upcoming Spring Dialogue on Saturday, May 8, 2010 will be an example of defending the rule of law, regardless of faith belief or no belief, Christian or other beliefs, and regardless of sexual orientation.

This year’s edition will bring two of those hot buttons to the forefront during a public meeting at the Downtown Public Library, located at 300 Park Avenue. The event will take place in the 4th floor Friends of the Library Room.

During the morning session Reverend Dr. Scott Jones from the Cathedral of Hope located in Oklahoma City (www.cathedralofhope.com) will discuss the latest book by Martha Nussbaum concerning the history of religious liberty. Rev. Jones has exercised his religious liberty by marrying his partner Michael Cich in the United Church of Christ denomination.

In the afternoon session, Razi Hashmi, Executive Director, CAIR Oklahoma, (http://ok.cair.com) will share his experience of living in Oklahoma as a follower of Islam and what it means for the separation of mosque and state.

Speaking on the topic of “Reflections and Suggestions” will be former Oklahoma State Representative, Reverend Jeff Hamilton, who is associate pastor at First Christian Church (http://fccokc.org) and President, Interfaith Alliance, Oklahoma City Chapter. (http://www.tia-ok.com/)

Keynote speaker in the afternoon will be Sandhya Bathija, Communications Associate from the Washington, DC office of Americans United (www.au.org). She will be discussing current church/state issues from the national point of view.

The Wonder of Worship: Prayer

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Prayer is the most basic of spiritual practices, and something we do privately or around the table with our family.  How is prayer in worship different and similar from these other forms of prayer?  What is the difference between the various prayers in our order of worship each week?

Our Formations Class, Sunday at 4:30 is exploring the various aspects of our worship and what meaning they can have for each of us, with the goal of enriching our experience of worship.

Sunday: Lance Schmitz is preaching

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Lance SchmitzThe Rev. Lance Schmitz, Minister of Social Justice at Oklahoma City First Nazarene Church, will be our guest preacher this Sunday.  Lance has become a popular guest preacher locally, preaching in the Mayflower Congregational  Church Distinguished Preaching Series and even delivering the Easter Sermon this year at First Unitarian Church.

“I first learned of Lance from the magazine Sojourners where he was profiled as a new kind of evangelical for his work on behalf of social justice and equality for everyone,” Pastor Scott Jones writes.  “We have since worked on a variety of local causes together.”

Scott goes on, “I know of no one in Oklahoma City better connected to the broad spectrum of justice concerns.”  Lance has worked on interfaith dialogue with the Muslim and Jewish communities, poverty with Catholic Charities, anti-war activism with the Peace House, anti-bullying with the Cimarron Alliance, and racial issues with Baptists.  He has been one of leaders in local, faith-based community organizing.

You won’t want to miss Lance’s passion and enthusiasm for justice and peace.  Join us Sunday at 6:00 p.m. for worship.

Should I Come Out at Work?

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

This is a question many LGBT Oklahomans struggle with. Instead of finding an easy answer, it often leads to more questions: Will it hurt my career? How will my coworkers treat me? Do I have any legal protection? If I don’t come out, who will I take to the company Christmas party?

Explore this timely topic on Thursday, May 6, as Cimarron Alliance Foundation’s LGBT 411 Series continues. Presenters include Paula Sophia Schonauer, Master Sergeant of the Oklahoma City Police Department, and Larry Cassil, Jr., a noted attorney with Pierce, Couch, Hendrickson, Baysinger & Green.

In this free 90-minute discussion, you’ll explore with others the pros and cons of coming out at work. You’ll also learn from experts about what rights you have and may not have in Oklahoma.

Don’t miss this terrific evening. Cimarron’s LGBT 411 Series is held the first Thursday of each month in our office at 729 NW 17 (at Shartel) in Oklahoma City. There is no cost and everyone is welcome.

Wonder of Worship: Song

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

What role does music play in your life and in your spirituality?  How does song connect us with the sacred?

Our Formations Class, Sunday at 4:30, will begin with these considerations.  We’ll examine the role of music in worship, its controversial history, the purpose of the music we use and what criteria we use to select the hymns and songs.
