That’s our theme on Sunday evening as we turn to the letter of I John. Love is essential to the suc-cess of the Christian community. What does that mean for our lives?
Go further with each week’s scripture and worship by joining in the discussion at the on-line forum or by attending Formations class at 4:30 on Sundays. Coming this summer will be a new opportu-nity, ?Hot Summer Nights. Stay tuned for more information.
Here are the list of volunteers that helped with the Fair:
Forest
Gwen O’Brien
Phil O’Brien
Nancy Sanders
Beth Sterling
Gale
Eric
Curtis
Tom McDonald
Linda
Joe–didn’t formally volunteer, but helped maintain the refreshment table.
The Choir donated the refreshments
There may be more, but these are the ones I remember (for now)
We had 18 Booths
We had 20 people working the fair (volunteers and outside vendors).
We had 15 people come through that were not working the fair
So our total attendance was 35.
If you look at just the numbers of people who attended, it was a bust—but if we have a positive impact on just one persons life, I consider it a success.
Here are some of the success stories. There may be more I haven’t heard about.
1. Loycee has been looking for someone to help with her husband (health issues) when she is out of town, and she found what she was looking for with one of the other vendors.
2. One person found out their blood pressure was elevated
3. Two people found a dentist
4. Three people were tested for HIV
5. Three people found a financial planner
6. Most of the people now know how to recognize a stroke–which can have a huge impact on someone’s life later
7. Several people (I can’t remember how many) are pursuing the Smoking Secession program
8. One person found a pharmacy for her aged father–they pre-package medications by dosage and time and deliver them to your home.
9. Two people had healing touch
10. One person had a massage
11. And the biggie, two people won free heart scans donated by Oklahoma Heart Hospital.
12. Two groups volunteered to help with the flu vaccines in the fall. YEA!!!
13. Vendors told me about other vendors who would want to attend the next fair.
Join us for worship this Easter Sunday as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus with wonderful music, sharing the Easter story, prayer, and communion.
Have you ever grieved the loss of a loved one? Have you ever feared death yourself? Do the incidents of violent death which surround us cause you confusion and doubt?
Our pastor will preach on resurrection as the Christian answer to the problem of death.
Join us as 6:00 p.m. for an uplifting
worship experience
April 19
3:00 – 5:30
In Daniel Hall at the First Unitarian Church building
600 N.W. 13th Street
We will be giving away two free heart scans, donated by the Heart Hospital! These are valued at $100 each.
Tests are free and include:
1. Diabetes
2. Blood Pressure
3. Vision
4. Bone Density – have to remove your shoes and socks, so no panty hose
5. Cholesterol–measures both good and bad
6. Body Mass Index—tells whether you are normal, fat or obese
7. Spirometer–a breathing test to indicate abnormal lung capacity involving asthma, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
8. HIV tests
Look for the big blue trailer with the Lions Clubs emblem and the Oklahoma murals on the sides. It will be parked outside the church.
It takes approximately 25 minutes to complete all six screenings. Women wanting to have the bone density test need to wear socks and shoes that can be easily removed. These are important health screenings. Glaucoma and diabetes are two of the major causes of blindness. Often these problems are not discovered until irreversible damage has occurred. Many people suffer from undetected hearing loss or high blood pressure. Osteoporosis or thinning of the bone tissues is also frequently an undetected problem, especially in women over 40 years of age. These free health screenings are co-sponsored by the Downtown Lions Club, the Lions of Oklahoma, and BlueCross BlueShield of Oklahoma.
Participating groups include:
Downtown Lions Club
Tobacco Cessation
Faith Hospice
HealthBack
Healing Touch
Planned Parenthood
Herland Sister Resources
RAIN
Other Options
Edward Jones
American Heart Association
Specialty Pharmacy
Trinity Spine & Neurology
OCADVSA
Affordable Health
ACLU
OGLPC
Pastor Scott tried something new this week. He had two potential sermon topics and couldn’t decide between them. So, he put the question out on the discussion forum and the church’s Facebook page.
This one received the most response:
John 12:12-26, the triumphal entry. Here I would likely focus on the messianic expectation and how Jesus fulfills and frustrates those. Maybe I would muse on what we would expect from a king.
So, what do we expect from a king? What does that title mean to us? What did it mean to call Jesus king?
Join us Sunday at 6:00 for Palm Sunday worship and in Formations Class at 4:30 as we continue to explore this and other topics as a congregation.
And now that we have the precedence for congregational participation in preparing Sunday’s sermon, stay tuned for similar possibilities in the future.
