No Formations on Sunday

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

There will be no Formations Class again on Sunday.  This is due to:

  • Pastor Scott’s participation in an ordination service that afternoon at the same time
  • The regular sub is out-of-town
  • The Council meeting, which may run late and need the extra time.

Wonder of Worship: The Word
The reading of scripture and the preaching of the word are primary worship moments which often determine everything else in a service.  We use the Revised Common Lectionary.  What is a lectionary, how does it order our spiritual practice, and how can we develop a deeper appreciation for the use of the word in our worship?

1oth Anniversary Testimony
Our popular series of testimonies on the ten year history of CoH continues with Mary Jane Rutherford sharing about the years 2006-2007 and our efforts to transition to independence — it is a story of great accomplishment in difficult circumstances.

Home-Making
The lectionary takes us to the Book of Acts and the story of the conversion of Lydia, a merchant to provides a home for the early missionary movement of the church.  It is a great text for Mother’s Day!  Pastor Scott Jones will preach about God’s character trait of home-making and how our practice of radical hospitality will draw us closer to the heart of God.

Mother’s Day Potluck
Following worship, our fellowship time will be our annual Mother’s Day Potluck.  Bring a favorite food and sense of fun.  Contact John Schenberg for more information.

The Wonder of Worship: Prayer

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Prayer is the most basic of spiritual practices, and something we do privately or around the table with our family.  How is prayer in worship different and similar from these other forms of prayer?  What is the difference between the various prayers in our order of worship each week?

Our Formations Class, Sunday at 4:30 is exploring the various aspects of our worship and what meaning they can have for each of us, with the goal of enriching our experience of worship.

Wonder of Worship: Song

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

What role does music play in your life and in your spirituality?  How does song connect us with the sacred?

Our Formations Class, Sunday at 4:30, will begin with these considerations.  We’ll examine the role of music in worship, its controversial history, the purpose of the music we use and what criteria we use to select the hymns and songs.

“Song” Playlist

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

How to put together a playlist for the Formations class this week, when the theme itself is “Song”?  I didn’t want to just put a lot of worship music, but wanted some songs about song itself as well.  Below is what I came up with from my collection.  What would you add?

  • “Waking Song” by R. Carlos Nakai
  • “How Can I Keep from Singing” performed by the Heartland Chorus
  • “Playtime” by Stefan Schramm (whale song set to music)
  • “Come Dance With Me” performed by Frank Sinatra
  • “Alleluia, beatus vir qui suffert” performed by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos
  • “History of Us” by The Indigo Girls
  • “Killing Me Softly with His Song” by the Fugees
  • “Piano Man” by Billy Joel
  • “The Messiah, Part III, Nos. 51-52 (Amen)” by G. F. Handel

The Wonder of Worship: Cross

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

“In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o’er the wrecks of time.”  With that splendid line from the classic hymn, we will launch our exploration of the cross as a symbol of our worship.  How do we use the cross?  What does it symbolize?  How does that then relate to your own experience of and spirituality of the cross?

And ultimately the cross leads to a liberation model of worship.  How is worship itself an act of liberation?

Join us for this powerful series “The Wonder of Worship” during our Formations Class on Sundays at 4:30 p.m. in the parlor.

Here is my playlist this week as I prepare for Sunday’s Formations Class on “The Wonder of  Worship: The Cross.”  What might you add to this list?

1)  Jesus of Suburbia – Green Day
2)  Strange Fruit — Billy Holiday
3)  American Triangle — Elton John
4)  Hurt — Johnny Cash
5)  St. Matthew’s Passion — J. S. Bach
6)  When It Don’t Come Easy — Patty Griffin
7)  Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring — J. S. Bach
